Cultism as we know it emerged in 1617 as a way of describing religious cults, but in its modern form, it emerged between the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Prototypes of cults have existed since antiquity, especially in ancient tribes and societies. An example could be the followers of Pythagoras, known for advancing mathematics and the execution of Hippasus of Metapontum, a mathematician known for discovering the existence of irrational numbers.
