It was first identified at the first outset of World War I when a majority of social democrats opted to support the war efforts of their respective governments and abandoned socialist internationalism and worker solidarity. Social patriots believe in promoting the interests of their citizens and nation first, contrary to modern mainstream social democrats that tend to support international cooperation and integration.
