During the Republican Era of Spain, PSOE was part of two governments, the first one being the 1931-1933 Spanish government led by Manuel Azaña and from 1936-1939 also led by Azaña. During the Spanish Civil War, PSOE would join the Popular Front against Franco and the Falangist . After the subsequent victory of the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, the PSOE would be exiled to Argentina, France and Mexico for 38 years, when in 1977 they would come back to Spain after the Death of Franco in 1975. Since the 1977 Spanish General Elections, PSOE has won 9 out of 16 elections, the most of any party. PSOE's history after 1977 is split into three eras. * González's Leadership (1982-1996) * Zapatero's Leadership (2004-2011) * Sánchez's Leadership (2018-present) González's Leadership - 1982-1996 <blockquote>See Main Article: Social Authoritarianism</blockquote> Felipe González (Born on the 5th of March 1942) was Prime Minister of Spain from 1982 till 1996 and PSOE Secretary-General from 1979 till 1997, when he resigned from politics altogether. He's known for his massive modernization of Spain, making Spain join NATO and the EEC, his handling of the Basque Conflict and his huge social and economic reforms. During the 90s González's popularity would decrease after the GAL scandal, which suggested that PSOE had involvement in funding GAL in eliminating ETA and corruption scandals caused González to lose the 1996 Spanish General Elections to the center-right People's Party.
