Taishō Democracy was a period of political and social change in the Empire of Japan that began in the final years of the Meiji period and lasted through the Taishō period. The term typically refers to the years from roughly 1905 to 1932. The period was characterized by a broad movement for greater political participation, the rise of [[File:Twoparti.png]]party politics, and the emergence of a vibrant civil society, including significant labor and social movements. This era of "imperial democracy" saw the power of the elected Diet expand and witnessed the establishment of party governments, a major shift from the earlier oligarchic rule of the genrō.

The movement's roots lay in the political framework of the Meiji Constitution, which created an elected lower house, and was fueled by the rise of a literate, urban populace and a growing working class. The era began with a wave of mass urban protests, most notably the 1905 Hibiya riots, which demonstrated a new popular desire to influence government policy. This "political crowd" expressed a nascent ideology that combined support for the emperor and empire with demands that the government respect the popular will. Concurrently, Japan's political parties, led by figures like Hara Kei and Katō Kōmei, transitioned from protest movements to "established parties" competing for control of the government, culminating in the establishment of the first true party cabinet under Hara in 1918.

The high point of the era in the 1920s saw the passage of the 1925 General Election Law, which granted universal male suffrage, expanding the electorate fourfold. This period also saw a "labor offensive", with the proliferation of labor unions and disputes, and the emergence of "proletarian parties" that contested elections. However, the expansion of political rights was accompanied by the repressive Peace Preservation Law, also passed in 1925, which targeted radical ideologies.

The era of Taishō Democracy came to an end in the early 1930s. The social and economic crisis of the Great Depression, coupled with the Manchurian Incident of 1931 and the rise of militarism, created an environment where parliamentary rule was seen as ineffective. After a series of political assassinations, most notably the May 15 Incident in 1932 which, killed Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi, party cabinets were replaced by "national unity" cabinets dominated by bureaucrats and military leaders, marking the end of the Taishō Democracy period and the transition to an era of "imperial fascis.m"

There was also recognition of newly independent African countries from Portugal, diplomatic improvements with China and a decrease in dependence on the United States. Other things were the construction of various public works, legalization of divorce and amnesty for exiles.

The petitions can take many forms, including phone calls, faxes, visits or even e-mails to any government office with regard to any of the issues with the purpose of holding directly-elected local officials accountable for their actions. . Petitioners may begin their attempts for redress at the local level with letters and calls to offices, which are located in courthouses or in township-level government offices. If unsatisfied, they can move up the hierarchy to provincial-level offices and, at the highest level, the National Public Complaints and Proposals Administration in Beijing. Official statistics indicate that petition offices annually handled around 10 million inquiries and complaints from petitioners from 2003 to 2007. 

However, this system is not without its flaws. Provincial capitals have been accused of hiring people in Beijing to abduct petitioners who have travelled from their areas and force them to go back home in a process known as "intercepting." Human rights organizations have accused Chinese authorities of arbitrarily imprisoning large numbers of petitioners in black jails or other illicit detention facilities. It's generally suspected that the Communist Party allows and encourages petitioning to identify and locate dissidents.

Bukele was born in 1983, out of Palestinian ancestors. In 1999, he finished high school and went to college. However, he left college short after that same year because he found a job in his dad's company making propaganda for the Socialist political party, Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front), which he joined in 2011, launching for the mayoralty of Nuevo Cusclatán, which he won, leaving his work at his dad's companies. During 2012, he described himself as "far-left". After his mayoralty ended, he also launched for the mayoralty of San Salvador, winning again. However, during this mayoralty, Bukele became a centrist and a critic of his party, the FMLN, which led to his expulsion in 2017 after tensions grew. After his expulsion, he ran for president on the 2019 elections, with the coalition Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas) which name reminded of his Nuevo Cusclatán mayoralty, where he reduced criminality and established a third way between the two party system on El Salvador at the time. However, the FMLN and the ARENA tried to ban him for participating, banning for participating in the elections in every party he was in, but eventually they led him and legalized the Nuevas Ideas coalition. He allied with the Social democratic party Cambio Democrático (Democratic Change) for the elections, but short after, the CD party was banned too, so he allied with the liberal conservative party Gran Alianza por la Unidad Nacional (Big Alliance for the National Unity) and he won the primaries. He was elected on February 2019, ending 30 years of the two party system on El Salvador.

Upon his first year, he would drastically reduce the crime rate of El Salvador by initiating policestate-like reforms and ordered the arrest of almost all of the country's gangs, making El Salvador safer than the US<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/19aa8l2/oc_el_salvadors_homicide_rate_is_now_lower_than/</ref>.
In July 2024, Bukele threatened to use the same tactics on wholesalers and distributors, whom he blamed for a recent steep rise in the prices of food and other basic goods.

“I am going to issue a call, like we did to the gangs at the start of 2019,” Bukele said, referring to the year he was first elected. “We told them either stop killing people, or don’t complain about what happens afterward.”
