The Cult of the Supreme Being (Culte de l'Être suprême) was a short-lived state-sponsored religion established in France by Maximilien Robespierre in May 1794 during the Revolution. Designed to replace Catholicism and the atheistic Cult of Reason, it promoted deism, civic virtue, and revolutionary republican ideals. The cult lasted only until Robespierre's fall, with its influence fading after July 1794.

The Girondins, also called Girondists, were a political group during the French Revolution. From 1791 to 1793, the Girondins were active in the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention. Together with the Montagnards, they initially were part of the Jacobin movement. They campaigned for the end of the monarchy, but then resisted the spiraling momentum of the Revolution, which caused a conflict with the more radical Montagnards. They dominated the movement until their fall in the insurrection of 31 May – 2 June 1793, which resulted in the domination of the Montagnards and the purge and eventual mass execution of the Girondins. This event is considered to mark the beginning of the Reign of Terror.

The Girondins were a group of loosely affiliated individuals rather than an organized political party and the name was at first informally applied because the most prominent exponents of their point of view were deputies to the Legislative Assembly from the département of Gironde in southwest France. Girondin leader Jacques Pierre Brissot proposed an ambitious military plan to spread the Revolution internationally, therefore the Girondins were the war party in 1792–1793. Other prominent Girondins included Jean Marie Roland and his wife Madame Roland. They also had an ally in the English-born American activist Thomas Paine.

Brissot and Madame Roland were executed and Jean Roland (who had gone into hiding) committed suicide when he learned about the execution. Paine was imprisoned, but he narrowly escaped execution.

The Plain, also known as the Marsh, was the majority of independent deputies in the National Convention during the French Revolution. They were the most moderate and the most numerous group (around 400 deputies) of the National Convention, as they sat between the Girondins on their right and the Montagnards (the Mountain on their left. Their name arises from the fact their benches were by the debating floor, lower down from the Montagnards. 

Coming mostly from the liberal and republican bourgeoisie, the Plain was attached to the political conquests of 1789 and to the work of the French Revolution and wanted the union of all republicans. In practice, this group was very heterogeneous as it included noblemen and clericals like Henri Grégoire, François Antoine de Boissy d'Anglas, Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès, and Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès; at the same time, some of its members like Bertrand Barère, Pierre-Joseph Cambon, Lazare Carnot, and Georges Couthon joined the Montagnards in the spring of 1793.

The Society of the Friends of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, mainly known as Cordeliers Club (French: Club des Cordeliers [klœb de kɔʁdəlje]), was a populist political club during the French Revolution from 1790 to 1794, when the Reign of Terror ended and the Thermidorian Reaction began.

The club campaigned for universal male suffrage and direct democracy, including the referendum. It energetically served as a watchdog looking for signs of abuse of power by the men in power. By 1793, it was challenging the centralization of power by Robespierre and his Committee of Public Safety. They responded by arresting the leadership, charging them with conspiring to overthrow the Convention. The leaders were guillotined, and the club disappeared.

The Indulgents, or Dantonists was a political faction formed around 1793 and centered around Georges Danton.

During the French Revolution, what was previously referred to as modérantisme changed after the fall of the Girondins, when revolutionaries around Danton and Camille Desmoulins also began to want to slow down the revolution in its violence. Another two famous Dantonists were Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles and Fabre d'Églantine. Although not a Dantonist, Jacques-Nicolas Billaud-Varenne maintained close relations with Danton. The name "Indulgents" was a derogatory term for Robespierre.

The movement emerged in the summer of 1793 as the moderate wing of the Cordeliers. At the same time, a group around Hebert developed in the other direction (Hebertists), which also met with the displeasure of the Jacobins, which also led to their destruction, two months before the Indulgents.

The Hébertists, were a radical revolutionary political group associated with the populist journalist Jacques Hébert, a member of the Cordeliers club. They came to power during the Reign of Terror and played a significant role in the French Revolution.

The Hébertists were ardent supporters of the dechristianization of France and of extreme measures in service of the Terror, including the Law of Suspects enacted in 1793. They favoured the direct intervention of the state in economic matters in order to ensure the adequate supply of commodities, advocating the national requisition of wine and grain.
