"By properly deploying both incentives and nudges, we can improve our ability to improve people’s lives, and help solve many of society’s major problems. And we can do so while still insisting on everyone’s freedom to choose."

Liberaltarianism is a political ideology that combines principles both from File:ModernLib.png Modern Liberalism and File:Libertarian.png Libertarianism. It's a mostly utilitarian ideology that believes in relatively small government, non-atomistic individualism, a live and let live philosophy, the ease of doing business and free markets, but accompanied with the more paternalistic approach of Modern Liberalism, arguing that full on laissez-faire economics aren't the way to go, and aim for a more moderate view.

This more paternalistic approach in regard to markets is also applied to government welfare programs. Contrary to most libertarians, they wouldn't advocate for the abolition of all welfare programs, nor, as many modern liberals, would they advocate for large-scale socialization of services such as healthcare. Instead, they try to advocate for a more moderate approach in these topics, such as a school voucher system or a compulsory private health insurance system.

In most issues, they'll usually advocate for an in-between of the liberal and the libertarian proposal, without exactly siding with either or fitting into either group. It is also a more right leaning version of Social Libertarianism and is more close to Yangism in some regards.

According to the survey, 22% of American Democrats consider themselves libertarians, which is much higher than the 12% of Republicans. There are some libertarians who will declare support for the Democrats in the election, especially libertarians who don’t like Trump. Yet they disagree over whether File:Harris.png File:TimWalz.png Harris-Walz is a "qualified libertarian" (legal marijuana, smaller police force, and a modicum of economic freedom) or a "lesser evil" (violation of property rights, high taxes, gun control).

Variants

[edit]

File:LeftLiberaltarianism.png Left-Liberaltarianism

[edit]

Left-Liberaltarianism is the more moderate form of left-libertarianism. It's pretty much a libertarian-leaning version of the views shared by either the File:Soclib.png mainstream centre-left or File:Liberalsoc.png more moderate liberal socialists, wishing to incorporate their basic principles within a fairly small state.

File:RightLiberaltarianism.png Right-Liberaltarianism

[edit]

Right-Liberaltarianism is the more moderate form of right-libertarianism. It acts as the middle ground between the highly File:Lfree.png laissez-faire philosophy of right-libertarianism and more moderate forms of File:ModEconlib.png market liberalism File:ModFiscon.png, sharing some or most of the rhetoric associated with right-libertarians while not viewing state welfare and regulations as an inherent negative.

File:Loof.png Lööfism

[edit]

Lööfism is based on the policies of former Swedish MP Annie Lööf from the Center Party, in which she was the leader from 2011 to 2023. The ideas are based on economic and File:Soclib.png Social Liberalism, along with the free competition of small farmers and entrepreneurs with the defense of File:Neoliberal-icon.png Neoliberalism. One of the main focuses would be environmental protection and the promotion of biodiversity through cooperation with foresters and private landowners. Other focuses would also be governmental decentralization, File:Libfem.png Liberal Feminism, the promotion of individual freedoms with the File:WomenLib.pngFile:Menslib.png equality of the sexes, immersion in File:Cball-UN.png international peace, promotion of the File:Cball-EU.png European Union, investment in infrastructure, defense of File:Libertarian.png Right-Libertarianism, rigorous actions against climate change and File:Anti-Corrupt.png organized crime, green industries, File:Neoliberalism-alt.png free trade between European countries, File:Antipop.png anti-populist blockade, national economy, generous immigration policy with contributions to refugees and opposition to Social Democracy. It is sometimes called Center Liberaltarianism due to its economically centrist policies.

File:MarkCuban.png Mark Cubanism

[edit]

Mark Cubanism is based on the political positions of File:Cball-Texas.png Dallas Mavericks Owner, alumnus of the TV Show File:Lfree.png "Shark Tank," and File:Markets.png businessman Mark Cuban. His politics were initially influenced by the writings of File:Ayn Rand.png Ayn Rand and the philosophy known as File:Objalt.png Objectivism.[7] Today, he would be considered a File:Radcent.png moderate File:Libertarian.png libertarian.[8] He has also formally endorsed and voted for many File:Demcr.png Democratic politicians like United States File:Prez.png Presidential Candidates former president File:Obamium.png Barack Obama (2008)[9] and former Secretary of State File:Hillary.png Hillary Clinton (2016).[10] Despite publicly supporting mainly Democratic candidates in the past, Cuban has stated, in an interview with 2024 United States Presidential candidate, current 2026 File:Cball-Ohio.png Ohio Gubernatorial Candidate, and founder of Roivant Sciences File:Vivek.png Vivek Ramaswamy, that he would have voted for a File:Antitrump.png non-MAGA Republican candidate if they ran against former president File:Bidenism.png Joe Biden in the 2020 United States Presidential Election._TRUTH_Podcast_#58-12|[11] Cuban endorsed Biden in that election.[12] Cuban also supports a File:Tax-Prog.png progressive tax system.[13]

Cuban has also been highly critical of President File:Blump.png Donald Trump, calling him a "jagoff."[10] Cuban also supports File:Globcap.png free trade and has voiced opposition to File:Protect.png President Trump's trade policies, saying that Donald Trump is "like the Grinch" and "The Grinch doesn't understand how tariffs work" while speaking at a rally for former Vice President File:Harris.png Kamala Harris, who he was supporting to defeat President Trump during the File:Dem.png 2024 Presidential Election. Cuban has also mocked File:Whitesup.png President Trump's border policy, asking the crowd at that same rally in which he was defending free trade, "Did File:Cball-Mexico.png Mexico pay for that wall?" then exclaiming, "Hell no!" after the crowd screamed, "No!"[14] In the aforementioned interview with Vivek Ramaswamy, Cuban stated, "I don't have a problem with deporting people who are here illegally, just do it File:ConNeoLIb.png compassionately... don't just stick them in a cage," when discussing the border control records of former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump._TRUTH_Podcast_#58-12|[11]

Mark Cuban economically is a File:Soccap-Alt.png social capitalist, and civilly is a supporter of File:Liberty.png limited government. In his blog "Blog Maverick," Cuban explained that there is nothing wrong with getting rich and "enjoying the shit out of your money." Cuban further states that if you are rich, paying taxes is a patriotic thing as you are supporting your fellow American who might not be as fortunate as you are. Cuban in the same post would praise government intervention in the economy, such as during the Great Recession, stating, "we don’t live in a perfect time. We live in a time where the government plays a big role in an effort to help lead us out this Great Recession. That’s reality," and prefaced this comment with the understanding that the government's use of taxpayer money is not always efficient.[13]

Civilly, Mark Cuban leans toward File:LibFoundation.png liberty. Mark Cuban has stated, in 2017, "As a libertarian, I think we can reduce employment in government by at least 1/3. Reduce the overhead and administration by that much or more, so we can offer more to services for our citizens."[15]

Cuban, in an interview with File:Mediastocracy flair.png Wired called "Mogul Support," explained his rationale for supporting a File:Regulationism.png $15 an hour minimum wage, or a "living wage." He stated that with a living wage, all companies play by the same rules, and no one is left living on the streets or with food insecurity. He further states that taxpayers subsidize companies when employees do not receive a living wage and instead get File:Welf.png government assistance. Cuban later said in that interview that he ensured everyone in his business was paid a fair wage so no one working for him needed government assistance. Cuban finishes his justification of a living wage in the interview by saying, "...raise the minimum wage to a living wage, and File:Marketeconomy.png compete, because that is what America's all about, Capitalism, File:Property.png entrepreneurship, with a little bit of File:Soccap.png compassion thrown in... think we'll be a far better country to live in."[16]

Other political statements Cuban has made include:

  • Criticizing DOGE, led by File:ElonMusk.png Elon Musk, for their Social Security office closures, stating, "Got to give Doge credit for being the first to cut entitlements. End telephone support for Social Security, cut dozens of SS offices and make Grandma and Grandpa finally get online to confirm their payments. What an amazing back door way to cut payments! Gonna be some upset seniors at town halls!”[17]
  • Donating $250,000 to the File:Neotech.png Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which launched an initiative in April 19, 2004 called the "Patent Busting Project" known for challenging patents that the organization claims are illegitimate and suppressing innovation.[18] Cuban stated, "the current state of patents and patent litigation in this country is shameful... silly patent lawsuits force prices to go up while competition and innovation suffer. That's bad for consumers and bad for business. It's time to fix our broken system, and EFF can help. So that's why part of my donation funds a new title for EFF Staff Attorney Julie Samuels: 'The Mark Cuban Chair to Eliminate Stupid Patents.'"[19]
  • Stating the net neutrality is a bad idea, reporting that rules to regulate broadband will "fuck everything up."[20]

Mark Cuban has also shown and given support for political figures like:

  • Senator from File:Cball-Utah.png Utah, File:Necon.png Orrin Hatch, donating $6,000 to the File:RepubUS.png Republican's election committee[21]
  • Congresswoman from File:Cball-California.png California Zoe Lofgren, donating $1,000 to the Democrat's election effort[21]
  • File:MichealBloomberg.png Mike Bloomberg, supporting the Draft Bloomberg Movement, which attempted convince the Mayor of File:Cball-NewYork.png New York City to run in the 2008 presidential election as an File:Moder.png independent candidate[22] (this movement ended at the end of February in 2008)
    • In the same blog post where he encouraged Bloomberg to run for president, stating, "Are you listening Mayor Bloomberg? For less than the cost of opening a tent pole movie, you can change the status quo," he criticised File:RonPaul.png Congressman Ron Paul, another 2008 election candidate for being "the worse of all the candidates when it comes to detailing how he would execute on his promises." Cuban further added that "Just saying you are going to cut and eliminate everything doesn’t mean you know how to do it and/or could get it done." He, however, praised the eventual 2008 GOP nominee, File:McCain.png Senator John McCain, for having a "riff" with the Republican party, stating that "there was a glimmer of hope that he was a candidate that thought for himself."[1]

Personality

[edit]

Liberaltarianism gets concerned when the government wants to involve more on his life. He is also a middle ground, and has a “no step on snek” flag on his garage. Liberaltarianism shares Liberalism’s government role in healthcare and liberties and Libertarian’s emphasis on minimal government intervention. Therefore he wants a small but effective government of market intervention and liberties, making him a charitable and energetic person.
