Revolutionary Nationalism (RevNat) is a broad current of nationalism that wishes to achieve nationalistic goals through a revolution against the status quo.

An example of a revolutionary nationalist in the Americas is File:Sandino.png Augusto Cesar Sandino, a File:Cball-Nicaragua.png Nicaraguan revolutionary leader who fought against the United States occupation of Nicaragua from 1927 until 1933.

Sandino led a rebellious group known as the Sandinistas which fought an insurgency against American forces. One action taken by the Sandinistas was the Battle of Ocotal, where the rebels attacked the garrison of Ocotal. The Sandinistas also destroyed American-owned gold mines and attacked Marine bases. After the occupation ended, Sandino was eventually assassinated by the Somoza-led National Guard forces.

Another example of revolutionary nationalism in the Americas is the regime of File:JuanVelasco.png Juan Velasco Alvarado in File:Cball-Peru.png Peru, which lasted from 1968 to 1975. Velasco saw the coup he led as part of a national revolution that would secure Peru's indepence. He was later overthrown by his prime minister File:MoralesBermúdez.png Francisco Morales Bermúdez.

File:FidelCastro.png Fidel Castro was a Cuban revolutionary and Marxist-Leninist politician that led Cuba from 1959 to 2008. Castro is considered revolutionary nationalist due to the fact that he led the Cuban Revolution against military dictator File:Batista.png Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

In File:Cball-Chile.png Chile and File:Cball-Argentina.png Argentina, there are a series of armed File:Cball-Mapuche.png Mapuche groups that engage in political violence in order to establish an autonomous state in the territory of Wallmapu, which is part of both Chile and Argentina.

In 1988, the Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco was founded as a result of the reignition of the Mapuche conflict around that time. The groups first attack was against a group of trucks in December 1997. In 2009, members of the organization occupied a estate in Chile in a incident that led to the controversial police killing of one of its members. Members of the CAM have also been accused of the murder of two wealthy farmers, although the CAM has denied this.

In 2012, members of another group, the Resistencia Ancestral Mapuche organization killed a police officer. A organization affiliated with the RAM took credit for the killing. In 2017, the RAM attacked trucks in Western File:Cball-Argentina.png Argentina with Molotov cocktails. These attacks led to the group being commonly classified as terrorist.

An example of revolutionary nationalism in Africa is the File:Cball-Algeria.png Algerian War, where the File:FLN.png National Liberation Front fought a guerrilla-war of independence against File:Cball-France.png France from 1954 to 1962.

Another example of revolutionary nationalism in Africa is the resistance against File:Apartheidism.png Apartheid in File:Cball-South Africa.png South Africa from 1948 until 1994. The resistance against apartheid was mostly peaceful, with methods such as File:Synd.png labor and school strikes being used.

However, after the File:PolState.png South African police fatally shot 69 people in the township of Sheepsvile in 1960, the anti-apartheid movement became more prone towards violence. The year after, File:Mandela.png Nelson Mandela founded the File:Natcom-Alt.png uMkhonto weSizwe paramilitary organization in order to start military resistance against apartheid. According to a trial of some of its leaders, including Mandela, the UMS carried out 221 militant acts within its first 3 years of operation. The group continued operation untill negotiations to end apartheid started in the 1990's.

The File:KhmerRogue.png Khmer Rouge is considered a revolutionary nationalist movement due to its strong nationalism and due to the fact that it waged the Cambodian Civil War against the File:Cball-Cambodia.png Kingdom of Cambodia, and later the File:KPNLF.png Khmer Republic from 1967 to 1975. The Khmer Rouge was aided by File:Hochi.png North Vietnamese forces, while the government forces were backed by the United States.

After 5 years of bloody guerilla warfare, the File:KhmerRogue.png Khmer Rouge defeated the government on April 17th, 1975, and Democratic Kampuchea was established. The Cambodian genocide would begin soon after, which would later kill 1.5 million to 2 million people.

File:Hochi.png Ho Chi Minh Thought, the ideology of Vietnam, is heavily influenced by revolutionary nationalism. In August 1945, the File:Hochi.png Việt Minh, under the leadership of File:HoChiMinh.png Ho Chi Minh, launched a rebellion against the File:Showa-kanmuri.png Japanese occupation. The revolution was mostly unopposed.

In 1946, the File:Hochi.png Việt Minh launched a revolt against the File:Cball-France.png French colonial forces that sparked the First Indochina War, that lasted until 1954, and ended with the partition of Vietnam into two states: the communist File:Hochi.png North, and the File:Anticommunism.png anti-communist File:Cball-SouthVietnam.png South.

This would spark the infamous Vietnam War, with the south receiving support from the United States and it's allies. After 19 years of guerilla fighting, the North Vietnamese forces ended up victorious with the capture of Saigon on April 30th 1975. Vietnam would be united in 1976.

Criticism

Revolutionary Nationalism has been criticized for its support of violence in order to achieve national liberation. Many groups prefer alternative methods such as File:Activm.png non-violent activism or negotiation.

For example, in File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestine, groups such as File:Hamas.png Hamas and File:Habash.png the PFLP have been criticized by advocates of a two-state solution for their support of violent methods in order to achieve a independent Palestinian state.

In pre-indepence File:Polandball.png Poland, a hypothetical revolt against Russian occupation was seen as unnecessary and was criticized by File:EndecjaPix.png national democratic organizations such as Endecja, who preferred negotiation with the Russian authorities.

Influence on other movements

Factions of the File:Ultranat.png ultranationalist movement believe in File:NatRev.png palingenetic nationalism, which is the idea that the nation must be rejuvenated via a national revolution against the status quo.

Although a majority of the File:Blacknat.png black nationalist movement followed the ideals of non-violence promoted by File:MLK Jr.png Martin Luther King Jr, some believed that revolution was the only way to insure determination for black peoples. This idea was especially popular among File:Sep.png black separatists who believed that a revolution was needed to secure a independent nation for black peoples.

The File:Blackan.png black anarchist movement was influenced by revolutionary nationalism. File:LucyParson.png Lucy Parsons, believed that revolution was the only way to dismantle File:Colonial.png colonialism, capitalism, and File:Sec.png authority and insure self-determination for black peoples.

Ba'athism

Ba'athism was founded on the principles that a revolution was needed to establish a independent and unified Arab state under the principles of socialism and liberty. The founder of the Ba'athist movement, File:Aflaq.png Michel Aflaq, believed that only a revolution backed by a vanguard party could bring the Arab world into a state of File:Prog-u.png progress.

Aflaq believed in the establishment of a File:Vanguardism.png revolutionary vanguard party in order to lead the Arab world into this revolution. This revolution, according to Aflaq, would rid the Arab world of ideologies such as capitalism and File:Reactcross.png reactionism that infected it and caused its decline.

Many File:Native.png Indigenist groups believe in a revolution against File:Imp.png imperialism in order to establish self-determination for indigenous peoples. Groups such as the File:Cball-Mapuche.png Coordinadora Arauco -Malleco believe in militant revolt against the government in order to establish a state for native peoples.

Despite its strong support for the preservation of File:Sec.png hierarchy and traditional order in almost a File:Reactcross.png reactionary sense, it is important to note that the File:Flang.png Falange believed in revolutionary nationalism. The Falange believed in political violence in order to File:PalUltranat.png rejuvenate the Spanish nation and establish a new Spanish empire.

National syndicalist movements believe in launching a national revolution against the capitalist system in favor of a significantly left-leaning File:Corptism.png corporatist economy. The idea of File:RevSynd.png revolutionary syndicalism is also a major influence on national syndicalist ideals and movements.
