Socialism of the 21st Century is an economically left-wing and culturally variable ideology. It is opposed to both capitalism and Marxism–Leninism, as it believes both failed to address issues such as poverty, hunger, racism, sexism, exploitation, the destruction of resources and the absence of a truly democratic system. It seeks to achieve its goals through parliamentary democracy, rather than violent revolution. It wants to establish an economy democratically controlled by the workers and based on the Marxian labor theory of value. It also wants strong democracy, with the utilization of referendums and protection of minority rights.

Beliefs

Socialism of the 21st century is a economically left Wing and culturally variable ideology that was developed by German theorist Heinz Dieterich in the 1990s.

Indigenism

Dietrich and many other 21st century socialists believe in the protection and preservation of indigenous rights. Dietrich believes that the struggle of indigenous peoples against imperialism and colonialism is inherently connected to the struggle of the working class against capitalism.

Economics

21st century socialism advocates for economic progressivism, and is famous for its fierce opposition to neoliberal economics. 21st century socialists believe in the enaction of socialist economic reforms, such as the nationalization of industries and national resources, protectionism, economic planning, and wealth redistribution.

Democracy

21st century socialism is a form of Democratic socialism. 21st century socialists reject revolutionary socialism, instead favoring reformist methods. 21st century socialists commonly criticize Marxism-Leninism for its rejection of democracy.

Moderate Socialism of the 21st Century

Moderate Socialism of the 21st Century It is a Center-Left variant of Socialism of the 21st Century, which advocates the expansion of Social Welfare but without abolishing Capitalism and can be considered a version of Social Democracy in Latin America. Although some claim to seek an alternative model to Washington Consensus, many have adopted and continued economic policies considered Neoliberal in their countries and have embraced the Third Way. Moderate Socialism of the 21st Century have points in common with others Socialists of the 21st Century, such as Latin American integration and the relationship between regimes and left-wing parties in Latin America, but the main difference is their approach to capitalism. The great example we can see of Moderate Socialism of the 21st Century was the Workers' Party governments in Brazil under Lula and Dilma.

• Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is a Brazilian politician and former trade unionist, founder of the Workers' Party (PT), who served as President of Brazil from 2003 to 2010 and again beginning in 2023. Lula began his political career during the Brazilian military dictatorship, when he rose to prominence as a union leader organizing major metalworkers’ strikes in the late 1970s.

In his early years in politics, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Workers' Party initially adopted a more left-wing political stance. During the 1980s, Lula defended workers’ rights, social reforms, and often expressed anti-capitalist views, arguing that Brazil should gradually move toward a socialist. However, Lula did not follow or openly advocate any form of Marxism, instead favoring a syndicalist approach.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Workers' Party gradually abandoned most socialist and anti-capitalist rhetoric and moved toward a more social-democratic and moderate political position. This shift aimed to broaden Lula’s electoral appeal and reassure financial markets and the business sector. In the 2002 presidential election, when Lula chose the businessman José Alencar as his vice-presidential running mate and the Workers’ Party formed an electoral coalition with the Liberal Party, a party associated with liberal conservatism.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is known for a pragmatic economic approach. He became associated with the economic growth Brazil experienced during the commodity boom, alongside the expansion of large social welfare programs. During his three governments, Lula adopted several fiscally conservative measures, such as maintaining fiscal surpluses and inflation targeting policies. In his first two administrations (2003–2010), Lula followed Third Way policies, which were criticized by some sectors of the left as neoliberal, particularly due to his cooperation with business leaders and financial sectors. At the same time, Lula also supported developmentalist policies, including state incentives for industrialization and economic development.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is often described as adopting a form of center-left populism, appealing to mass political discourse and seeking strong support from poorer social sectors. His political style frequently emphasizes poverty reduction, and the representation of working-class interests. Despite being generally considered progressive, Lula has often taken moderate positions on certain social issues. He has tended to avoid strongly supporting controversial topics such as abortion and drug legalization, and has historically sought political alliances with Christian conservative groups.

During the governments of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, several major corruption scandals involving political allies and government ministers occurred. In 2018, Lula was arrested on corruption charges, but he was later released and had his convictions annulled by the courts. Despite this, due to the various scandals associated with his governments and political allies, Lula and the Workers' Party have continued to face strong criticism from opposition groups, who frequently accuse them of corruption.
