"I am an international leader, the dean of the Arab rulers, the king of kings of Africa and the Imam of Muslims."
Gaddafism, also known as Third International Theory, is an File:Sec.png authoritarian, economically
left, and File:Nation.png nationalist ideology influenced by
Islam.
Gaddafism is a term used to describe the ideology and ideas of File:Muammar.png Muammar Gaddafi, who, in a File:StratoHelm.png military coup of the Libyan monarchy, became the de facto ruler of File:Gaddafi.png Libya from 1969 to 2011.[7]
Foundations and Beliefs
[edit]Gaddafi considered liberal democracy to not represent true democracy as true democracy is the rule of the people rather than representatives who are really representing their own interests and not the people. He considered the only way to get around this was direct democracy with the use of popular conferences. On the question of law he rejected any secular law and wanted law to be based on Religion he considered this to be in line with democracy as religion is practiced by all the people in society. On the question of press he wanted press to be created by the state so it would be democratic rather than independent press which he considered to only represent certain groups in society and not the entire population.
Gaddafi considered wage labour to be a form of slavery and wanted to abolish the wage system. On housing he criticized rent because for him it compromised freedom and instead wanted people to own their own homes. He wanted income to be a partnership between people and for people to manage their own income instead of gaining it from others through charity or wages. He wanted people to own their own lands rather than having it rented from another person which he considered to infringe on freedom.
Gaddafi created a project of regional unity, known as pan-Arabism, aiming at creating a common Arab state. In this project, Gaddafi viewed Islam as an essential pillar, hence approaching ideas of pan-Islamism. Islam worked as a unifying factor of universal relevance. Gaddafi wished to promote an alternative to the communism and capitalist philosophies in the Third International Theory. This theory, developed in The Green Book, was addressing not only the Arab world but the entire globe and promoted direct democracy through the General People's Committee establishing a direct dialogue between the population and the government.
Anti-Imperialism and Foreign Policy
[edit]Gaddafi opposed Western colonialism and neo-colonial influence, viewing imperialism as a threat to national and regional autonomy. He supported liberation movements across Africa and the Arab world, including military and financial aid to revolutionary groups. His foreign policy was characterized by attempts to establish African unity through the African Union and regional solidarity against external domination.
Gender and Society
[edit]Gaddafi endorsed a vision of social reform that included women’s rights within an Islamic framework. He promoted women’s education and participation in public life, including military service, while framing these reforms as consistent with traditional cultural and religious values.
Economics and Resource Control
[edit]Gaddafi advocated for resource nationalism, particularly in the control of oil revenues. He sought to redirect profits from foreign corporations to benefit Libyan society, fund social programs, and develop infrastructure. He emphasized cooperative economic structures and collective ownership, rejecting both free-market capitalism and state-centered command economies.
Culture and Identity
[edit]Gaddafi emphasized the revival of Arab and African identity, rejecting Western cultural dominance. He promoted education, art, and media to reflect national and regional values, while discouraging what he considered foreign cultural influence. His ideology aimed to create a sense of collective identity rooted in both Arab nationalism and African solidarity.
History
[edit]File:Muammar.png Muammar Gaddafi's Early Life
[edit]File:Muammar.png Gaddafi was born on the 7th of June, 1942, into a nomadic Bedouin family near the city of Sirte, Libya.[8]
At the age of 9, he left his family camp in order to go to school. When he was in a secondary school in Sebha, Gaddafi was inspired by the Egyptian president at the time, Gamal Nasser. This lead to him becoming an File:Antiwest.png anti-West File:PanArab.png Pan-Arab nationalist. He set up revolutionary study groups with some of the students at his school. He continued this practice up to when he joined the University of Libya in Benghazi[9] in 1963 to study history, but he dropped out to join the military academy in the city.[10]
Military Career and Coup
[edit]While in military school, Gaddafi met people who shared his File:Antiwest.png anti-West File:PanArab.png pan-nationalism. They then teamed up and immediately started planning a coup of the Libyan monarchy in place at the time. Gaddafi was later sent to File:Cball-UK.png Britain for further training, and his nationalism was intensified by his experiences there.[11]
When he came back, Gaddafi and his comrades continued planning the event, and in September of 1969, successfully overthrew the monarchy and founded the Libyan Arab Republic. The new country was ruled by the Revolutionary Command Council, which Gaddafi quickly rose the ranks, becoming the chairman of the council and colonel in the military.[11]
Rule From 1969-2011
[edit]Once in power, in 1970, Gaddafi removed
American and File:Cball-UK.png British military bases from the country and kicked out the File:Jew.png Jewish and
Italian communities that same year. In 1993, he nationalized all petroleum assets in Libya that were owned by foreign entities. He then implemented laws that aligned with his
Islamic principles, like banning alcohol.[7]
In 1973, while economic reforms were underway, Gaddafi announced the "Peoples Revolution" in a speech. This was meant to implement a form of File:Islamic Socialism.png Islamic Socialism (This ideology is laid out in the Green Book and summarized in the Foundations and Beliefs section). He continued announcing and proposing ideas throuout the 70's and early 80's.[12]
One of these announcements was that of the newly proclaimed File:Gaddafi.png Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in 1977. These actions caused some opposition to arise and plots against Gaddafi were made, but the state quickly suppressed then and issued warnings to anyone who may get any ideas.[12]
2011 Civil War and Death
[edit]In 2011, anti-regime protesters, inspired by recent events in File:Cball-Egypt.png Egypt and File:Cball-Tunisia.png Tunisia, held rallies in Benghazi to protest the arrest of a human rights lawyer. The protesters called for Gaddafi to step down from his position, leading to clashes with the Libyan security forces and the protesters. To counter the protest, authorities set up a File:Gaddafi.png pro-regime protest and broadcast it on state TV.[13]
These actions caused tensions to rise between the two parties, ultimately leading to the protesters taking control of the city, which, in turn, lead to authorities using lethal force on the protesters and taking other File:Sec.png authoritarian measures, like blocking access to the internet and interrupting telephone service.[13]
This rise in violence lead to condemnation from the File:Cball-UN.png international community, and lots of resignations from Libyan positions, like the Libyan ambassador to the File:Cball-UN.png UN Many Libyan embassies flew pre-Gaddafi flags in protest and many units of the File:StratoHelm.png military started to side with the protesters, causing Gaddafi's power to weaken significantly.[13]
After a while, the protesters got weapons and teamed up with the anti-Gaddafi units of the File:StratoHelm.png military, forming a full-out armed rebellion, and therefore, starting a civil war. From here, it went downhill for Gaddafi. There were File:Cball-UN.png international calls for his resignation and the armed resistance, although weak, but with the help of foreign powers, like File:Necon.png NATO, managed to advance.
Tripoli, the capital and largest city of Libya, fell on August 28, 2011. Finally, on October 12 in 2011, Gaddafi was found and killed in his hometown of Sirte, marking the fall of his File:Gaddafi.png regime.[13]
Foreign Relations
[edit]North America
[edit]
United States
[edit]Gaddafi and his regime were known for funding groups abroad that aligned with his beliefs, like the File:Blacknat.png Black Panther Party in the US and the File:Provo.png Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland. These activities caused a growing disfavor of Gaddafi in the eyes of the
American government, and in 1986, carried out airstrikes on several sites in File:Gaddafi.png Libya, barley missing Gaddafi, but killing many members of his family in the process.[7]
This relationship with
America and the File:Cball-UN.png international community only got worse after it was revealed that Gaddafi's regime had funded File:Terrorist.png terrorists who blew up a civilian plane over Lockerbie, File:Cball-Scotland.png Scotland in 1988, killing all onboard and some on the ground. As a result, the File:Cball-UN.png UN and
America sanctioned File:Gaddafi.png Libya, but later, in the 90's, Gaddafi would hand over the alleged File:Terrorist.png terrorists and the File:Cball-UN.png UN dropped the sanctions, but the
US would not do the same until 2003, when Gaddafi ended his weapons program.[7]
During the
US invasion of Grenada, File:Gaddafi.png Libya sent military advisors to File:Cball-Grenada.png Grenada.
Africa
[edit]Another one of the regime's foreign relations was in 2009, when Gaddafi was named the head of the File:Cball-AfricanUnion.png African Union. Almost immediately, Gaddafi's strong File:Pan-Africanism.png pan-nationalism made some members of the union uneasy. He advocated for an extremely strong union of all the member states and the eventual formation of the "United States of Africa", which would function as any other sovereign government.[14] In 2010, when Gaddafi tried to become the head again after his one year term ended, several African nations pushed back and he was denied.[7]
In the same year as his promotion to head of the File:Cball-AfricanUnion.png AU, Gaddafi, giving a speech at a File:Cball-UN.png UN General Assembly, famously tore a copy of the UN charter, causing controversy in the international community.[7]
In 2008, File:Gaddafi.png Muammar Gaddafi claimed the title of "File:Unimon.png king of kings" after a gathering of more than 200 African File:Tribal.png tribal kings and chiefs endorsed his use of the title on 28 August that year, stating that "We have decided to recognise our File:Gaddafi.png brotherly leader as the 'File:Unimon.png king of kings', File:Monarch.pngsultans, File:Feud.png princes,
sheikhs and File:Urb.png mayors of Africa". At the meeting, held in the city of File:Cball-Libya.png Benghazi, Gaddafi was given gifts including a throne, an 18th-century
Qur'an, File:Trad.png traditional outfits and ostrich eggs. At the same meeting, Gaddafi urged his guests to put pressure on their own governments and speed the process of moving towards a File:Pan-Africanism.png unified African continent File:Blacknat.png. Gaddafi told those that attended the meeting that "We want an File:Mil.png African military File:Strato.png to defend File:Cball-AfricanUnion.png Africa, we want a single African currency, we want one File:Civnat.png African passport to travel within Africa". The meeting was later referred to as a "bizarre ceremony" in File:Mediastocracy flair.png international media.
Under Muammar Gaddafi’s rule, Libya had a large population of Black African migrant workers, many of whom were drawn to the country by economic opportunities. Gaddafi’s government, particularly in the 1990s and 2000s, promoted pan-African policies, investing in African nations and offering many Black Africans jobs, education, and financial support. He saw Libya as a bridge between North and Sub-Saharan Africa, encouraging labor migration and proposing a "United States of Africa." However, this association with Gaddafi became dangerous after his overthrow in 2011.
During the NATO-backed uprising, Black Libyans and African migrant workers were often scapegoated, accused of being "mercenaries" fighting for Gaddafi, despite little evidence supporting these claims. This led to horrific violence, with many Black people facing lynchings, torture, and displacement at the hands of rebel militias and mobs. Cities like Tawergha, which had a large Black population, were completely emptied, with residents forced into exile. Even after Gaddafi’s fall, systemic racism and mistreatment persisted as Libya descended into chaos, leaving many African migrants vulnerable to human trafficking and abuse in detention centers. Gaddafi’s pan-Africanist policies had provided economic stability for many, but in the wake of his removal, Black communities in Libya bore the brunt of the ensuing violence and lawlessness.
File:Cball-Mozambique.pngFile:Cball-Angola.pngFile:Cball-Namibia.pngFile:Cball-South Africa.png South Africa
[edit]Many File:Leftnat.png left-wing nationalist groups which fought for independence against File:Cball-Portugal.png Portugal, were supported by File:Gaddafi.png Libya. File:Cball-Mozambique-old.png FRELIMO has been one of Muammar Gaddafi's closest allies, since the moment it launched independence struggle against File:Cball-Portugal.png Portugal. File:Cball-Guinea-Bissau.png PAIGC, which fought for independence during the Portuguese Colonial War, received support from File:Gaddafi.png Libya. File:SWAPO.png SWAPO was also armed by File:Gaddafi.png Libya, in the South African Border War. File:Cball-Namibia.png Namibia issued a statement criticizing the
US intervention, at the beginning of Libyan Civil War.
File:Cball-Angola.png MPLA is known to have cooperated with File:Gaddafi.png Libya during the Portuguese Colonial War, but to a lesser extent than national liberation movements in countries such as File:Cball-Mozambique.png Mozambique and File:Cball-South Africa alt.png South Africa.
ANC, which fought against the racist policies of File:Cball-South Africa.png South Africa, also received economic and military support from File:Gaddafi.png Libya. File:Cball-South Africa.png South Africa's diplomatic relations with File:Gaddafi.png Libya improved[15] after File:Mandela.png Nelson Mandela came to power in the first File:Dem.png democratic elections of country. Despite criticism from the
US, the cooperation between
ANC leader File:Mandela.png Nelson Mandela and Muammar Gaddafi continued. During this period, many meetings were held between two countries. File:Cball-South Africa.png South Africa awarded Muammar Gaddafi the Order of Good Hope, in the year of 1997.
File:Cball-Ethiopia.pngFile:Cball-Eritrea.png Horn of Africa
[edit]File:Gaddafi.png Libya cooperated with the government led by File:Mengistu Mariam.png Mengistu Haile Mariam, towards the end of Ethiopian Civil War. However, this alliance didn't last long and was dissolved in the year of 1991. File:EPRDF.png EPRDF entered Addis Ababa with its allies and won the war. File:Cball-Eritrea.png Eritrean rebel groups were also supported by File:Gaddafi.png Libya in Ethiopian Civil War, which started as a result of the violent power struggle and efforts to declare independence. Muammar Gaddafi and File:SaddamHussein.png Saddam Hussein supplied large amounts of arms to File:Cball-Eritrea.png Eritrea. File:Gaddafi.png Libya, which cooperated with File:Natcon.png ELF before the year of 1977, has supported File:IsaiasAfwerki-PFDJ.png EPLF since then. File:Natcon.png ELF's move away from
Marxism-Leninism and the emergence of new alternatives were the most important factors in cessation of support they received from File:Gaddafi.png Libya.
File:Cball-WesternSahara.png Western Sahara
[edit]File:PolisarioFront.png Polisario Front received weapons supply from File:Gaddafi.png Libya in Western Sahara War. Muammar Gaddafi saw File:Cball-Morocco.png Morocco as an occupying state and File:Franco-alt.png Spain as an File:Imp.png imperialist power. He found the views of File:PolisarioFront.png Polisario Front close to him and thought they held
socialist and File:Trad.png traditional values. File:Gaddafi.png Libya also gave political support to File:PolisarioFront.png Polisario Front and independence of the File:Cball-WesternSahara.png Sahrawi people, during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi.
Their other allies included File:Leftunity.png left-wing actors in Middle East such as File:Cball-Algeria.png Algeria, File:Cball-Syria.png Syria and File:PFLP.png PFLP.
File:Berberism.png Berbers
[edit]Gaddafi has denied the existence of indigenous Berbers as an ethnicity alongside the now-dominant population of Arab origin, although communities of Berbers still live in areas west and southwest of the capitol Tripoli. Gaddafi called Berbers, also known as Amazigh, a “product of colonialism” due to the Kabyle Myth created by the West to divide Libya. The Berber language was not recognized or taught in schools, and it was forbidden in Libya to give children Berber names.
File:Cball-Uganda.png Uganda
[edit]Similarity between the African policies of Muammar Gaddafi and File:IdiAmin.png Idi Amin, enabled two leaders to establish many economic and military cooperations. File:Gaddafi.png Libya supported File:Cball-Uganda.png Uganda by sending 400 soldiers to the 1972 invasion of Uganda and 4500 soldiers to the Uganda-Tanzania War.
Ugandan Bush War was also among the wars in which File:Gaddafi.png Libya participated, by supporting File:NRM-Uganda.png NRM and West Nile rebel groups.
File:Cball-Mali.png Mali
[edit]File:Cball-Azawad.png MNLA, which fought to establish an independent Azawad, also received support from File:Gaddafi.png Libya for a short time.
File:Cball-Chad.png Chad
[edit]File:Gaddafi.png Libya, which supported File:FROLINAT.png FROLINAT and many rebel groups during the Chadian Civil War, began to invade File:Cball-Chad.png Chad in the year of 1978. Muammar Gaddafi's main goals were to annex the Aouzou Strip, turn File:Cball-Chad.png Chad into a satellite state of File:Gaddafi.png Libya, and obtain a base for his Central African policies. File:Gaddafi.png Libya has carried out many operations in the region, through the File:Islamic Socialism.png Islamic Legion.
File:Cball-Chad.png Chad resisted File:Gaddafi.png Libya for a long time, with the foreign support it received from
US, File:Cball-France.png France and File:Zio.png Israel. File:Gaddafi.png Libya had to withdraw, when many rebel groups opposing File:FROLINAT.png FROLINAT cooperated with File:Cball-Chad.png Chad.
File:Cball-Comoros.png Comoros
[edit]File:Gaddafi.png Libya provided logistical support to File:Cball-Comoros.png Comoros during the 2008 invasion of Anjouan.
Middle East
[edit]File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestine
[edit]Muammar Gaddafi appreciated the File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestinian resistance against File:Zio.png Israel, which he saw as
socialist and File:Modnat.png patriotic. Both sides were influenced by anti-imperialism and allied with
Soviet Union in the Cold War.
File:PLO.png PLO received intense economic and military support from the File:Gaddafi.png Libya and the groups within it separately established connections with Muammar Gaddafi. They fought alongside File:Gaddafi.png Libya in many parts of File:Cball-AfricanUnion.png Africa and supported Muammar Gaddafi during the Libyan Civil War.
File:Gaddafi.png Libya saw File:Fatah.png Fatah as one of the main actors of conflict between File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestine and File:Zio.png Israel. File:Fatah.png Fatah and its leader File:Arafat.png Yasser Arafat cooperated with Muammar Gaddafi until the year of 1978. As a result of the continuation of Lebanese Civil War, File:Gaddafi.png Libya's provide turned to
Marxist-Leninist File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestinian groups.
File:PFLP.png PFLP has long been supported by File:Gaddafi.png Libya, in their actions in File:Cball-Palestine.png Palestine and File:Cball-Lebanon.png Lebanon. However, in later periods, the cooperation ended as a result of ideological differences between them. File:DPLF.png DFLP also had some contacts with File:Gaddafi.png Libya, although less than other groups.
External support needed by the File:Leftnat.png PPSF, which was established after the split of File:PFLP.png PFLP due to ideological differences, was provided by File:Gaddafi.png Libya. As a result, the group increasingly came under File:Gaddafi.png Libya's direction.
File:As-Saiqa.png As-Sa'iqa, the Palestinian branch of File:Neo-Baath.png Syrian-led Ba'ath Party and dissidents within File:Fatah.png Fatah, such as File:Fatah.png Abu Nidal Organization cooperated with File:Gaddafi.png Libya. Muammar Gaddafi provided military support to File:Conservative.png conservative and File:Nation.png nationalist groups like File:Hamas.png Hamas and File:Nation.png PFLP-GC, which were outside File:PLO.png PLO. File:Nation.png Black September Organization also carried out some of its attacks under the sponsorship of File:Gaddafi.png Libya.
Personality and Behavior
[edit]Gaddafism's strange solution to his philosophical conundrum is so poorly thought through he has a hard time convincing other balls of its reason to exist. As he has a notoriously short temper, this can lead to a lot of conflict between him and the other balls from across the spectrum, though it's usually just a one sided shouting match. Most of the balls have learnt he's not really worth their time.
